This is the first in a series of events organised by Reimagine Sentul. Topics were selected based on input gained after a community walk.
Who gets to write a town’s history? ‘Official’ histories tell only part of the many stories that make up our shared past. Reimagine Sentul bring you two speakers who have worked to capture the voices often less heard: town buildings that have stood for decades, a grandmother’s childhood stories, a street named after a forgotten figure.
Getting to know the place we interact with means cultivating curiosity for what’s in front of us, and for all the stories hidden underneath. By seeing a place for what it is—and what it once was—we can plan and care for it more responsibly.
Do you really know Sentul?
Session 1
Architecture/Archaeology: Planning Future, Drawing Past
Gary Yeow, Managing Director, undo_my (Unagru Design Office Malaysia)
Architecture anticipates and shapes the future by addressing societal and economic needs through design. Once built, structures become living archives, revealing cultural stories and heritage that define a place’s identity.
Architectural designer and educator Gary Yeow will present research from Within, Without: Photo Essay of Modernist Buildings in Teluk Intan, highlighting how uncovering a place’s past can guide better future design in Sentul and beyond.
(20 min. talk)
Session 2
Telling Sentul's Stories by the Community, for the Community
Joelynn Chin, Founding Member, Sentul Then & Now
As a collective of local history enthusiasts, Sentul Then & Now goes beyond archives to capture Sentul’s vibrant past. We learn how they crowdsource information through oral histories, old photographs, and guided community walks.
They share with us the rich stories and discoveries they have uncovered using this community-driven process. Their talk is followed by an invitation for participants to explore the streets of Kovil Hilir with new eyes, identifying and appreciating the layers of history and culture embedded in everyday life.
(30 min. talk + 60 min. activity)
